Little Ruth Reddingford
and the Wolf
Written by Hank Wesselman
Illustrated by Raquel Abreu
Reading Level: Ages 4-10
Size: 11" x 8.5"
On her way through the woods to visit her grandmother, Ruth is confronted by a nasty pair of bullies. She narrowly escapes, but they follow her all the way to Grandma’s condo—where they meet both Grandma, a Hopi medicine woman, and a great white wolf, the spirit guardian who watches over and protects Ruth wherever she goes. As the bullies are overcome, Ruth not only gains strength and self-confidence, but also discovers the power of her Hopi heritage and makes an extraordinary new friend.
Hank Wesselman’s unique retelling of a classic fairy tale is a wonderful introduction to both ancient and modern day Native American cultures. His inclusion of the passing down of shamanic traditions from grandmother to granddaughter is a tribute to female empowerment. Raquel Abreu’s dynamic illustrations help make Little Ruth Reddingford and the Wolf an uplifting story to be enjoyed again and again.
